Mountain bike size chart by height

Each mountain-bike maker prints a rider-height span for every frame size of a model, and neighbouring spans mostly meet or overlap. A 5 ft 10 in (178 cm) rider reads M or L or S3 or S4 or S5 across the 7 charts here, and five of them list that rider in more than one size. The table reads every chart at every inch from 4'10" to 6'8".

Charts: Specialized Fuse fit chart; Specialized Chisel size chart (published by evo); Santa Cruz 5010 size chart (published by evo); Norco Range size chart (published by evo); Giant Talon 3 (2020) sizing guide; Specialized Stumpjumper EVO size chart (published by evo); Yeti Cycles Fit Guide (yeticycles.com model geometry pages). Charts marked "published by evo" are the brand's chart as reproduced by the retailer evo, which names the brand on the page and the model. The Yeti chart is the Fit Guide Yeti prints on its own geometry page for each model, the same span per size on all eight models read (SB120, SB135, SB140, SB150, SB160, ARC, ASR 40th Anniversary, MTe); evo publishes the same spans as its Yeti 2026 MTB size chart. Stumpjumper EVO and Yeti checked 2026-10-26; the others 2026-10-20 (Giant Talon 2026-10-21). A cell reads every size whose printed span includes the height, ends included; nothing is interpolated.

Why the same rider gets different letters

A size letter belongs to one model. The six charts that print a medium start it between 5'4.5" and 5'7" and end it between 5'8.5" and 5'11": Specialized Fuse M 5'5"–5'10", Specialized Chisel M 5'5"–5'10", Santa Cruz 5010 M 5'5"–5'9", Norco Range M 5'4.5"–5'8.5", Giant Talon M 5'7"–5'11", Yeti M 5'5"–5'11". Specialized's Stumpjumper EVO uses numbered sizes, S1 to S6, instead of letters. The charts also reach different heights: Santa Cruz 5010 starts at 4'8" (XS), and Yeti runs to 6'11" (XXL).

How often a height falls in more than one size depends on how far each chart's spans overlap. Across the 23 heights in the table: Specialized Fuse lists more than one size at 3, Specialized Chisel lists more than one size at 3, Santa Cruz 5010 lists more than one size at 5, Norco Range lists more than one size at 3, Giant Talon lists more than one size at 5, Specialized Stumpjumper EVO lists more than one size at 14, Yeti lists more than one size at 14. Where one size's span ends at the height the next begins and never overlaps it (Specialized Fuse, Specialized Chisel, Santa Cruz 5010), the double reading happens only at those boundary heights; where most sizes overlap the next by 2 inches or more (Specialized Stumpjumper EVO, Yeti), it covers much of the range. Some spans leave a gap instead: Specialized Fuse XS ends at 5'1" and S starts at 5'2"; Specialized Chisel XS ends at 5'1" and S starts at 5'2". The table reads whole inches, so it does not show those gaps; a rider between the two printed heights is in neither size on that chart.

Choosing between two sizes

None of the charts picks for a rider who fits two sizes. evo's page for the Yeti chart: "Sizing up provides greater stability at speed and through rough terrain." "Sizing down can make a bike feel more playful, nimble, and sensitive to rider input." "Riders with longer torsos or arms often size up to avoid feeling cramped." "Riders with shorter torsos or longer legs often size down to get the best fit." The Stumpjumper EVO page says the same in one line: "Riders between sizes may size up or down according to riding style, body proportions, or personal preference."

Height is a first cut. Cannondale's stand-over method uses inseam: "Measure your inseam with your legs 8-10 inches apart and subtract 1-2 inches for crotch clearance." Keep 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) of clearance over the top tube on the model's geometry chart. The inseam guide works through it.

Yeti's Fit Guide prints the same span for a size on every model read. XS (4'10"–5'3") is offered on the SB120 and SB135 only and XXL on the SB120, SB140 and SB160 only; S to XL on all eight models read (SB120, SB135, SB140, SB150, SB160, ARC, ASR 40th Anniversary, MTe). evo's copy of the chart prints S to XXL with no XS.

Left out: Marin mountain bikes (evo page): evo's Marin page (read 2026-10-26) prints one rider height per mountain-bike size column, not a span, and names no model year. A single height cannot be read as a size span without guessing where the size ends. Trek: its size charts could not be read from Trek. Giant's chart is the 2020 Talon page, the latest Giant mountain-bike chart that could be read from Giant.

Mountain or hybrid at the same height

At 5'10" the hybrid charts read L or M (Specialized Crossroads L, Giant Escape M), against M or L or S3 or S4 or S5 on the mountain charts. Hybrid, gravel and mountain charts for each height sit together on the bike size by height pages.
