Reading the charts at four-foot-ten

At 4'10" every chart that covers the height puts the rider in a single size, so there is no in-between call to make for a four-foot-ten rider. Norco Range and Specialized Crossroads do not print a size for this height: the smallest frame starts taller.

All the mountain-bike charts that cover 4'10" agree on XS. Letter sizes are still each brand's own, so check the model's geometry before buying.

Checking the fit beyond height

Height charts assume average proportions. Cannondale's method uses inseam instead: "Measure your inseam with your legs 8-10 inches apart and subtract 1-2 inches for crotch clearance." Then compare that stand-over figure with the model's geometry chart and keep 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) of clearance over the top tube. A rider with long legs for 4'10" may suit the larger of two sizes; a long torso and short legs, the smaller with a longer stem.

Either side of four-foot-ten

A five-foot rider reads XS.

For a four-foot-ten rider these are the brands' published height spans, a starting point for a test ride, not a bike fit. Trek is not listed: its size charts could not be read from Trek. See the methodology.
