Reading the one hundred seventy-pound rows
Jones's weight bands overlap, and 170 lb sits in two of them (155–170 lb and 165–180 lb). Jones's own rule for that case is to "choose the middle size", so the useful reading is the middle of 152–159 cm. Jones adds that height plays only a minor role, so weight takes priority.
evo's chart is built on height, with a weight range per height. A one hundred seventy-pound rider appears on 3 of its rows, from 5'8" to 6'0", which is why its reading is the widest: 148–164 cm. Never Summer lists 170 lb on 2 rows (5'10", 160–175 lb; 6'0", 170–185 lb), and its tallest rows print only "159+" cm, a floor rather than a length.
At this weight at least one chart prints an open-ended row ("+"), so the top of the span is not a number the brand gives. Read the shared window, or the specific board's own weight range, for the upper limit.
Adjusting a one hundred seventy-pound rider's board for style
Jones moves its chart answer for how you ride. Applied to the shared window for a one hundred seventy-pound rider (159 cm):
- Freeride, big mountain or powder: 2 to 3 cm longer, about 161–162 cm, for float and stability at speed.
- Freestyle and park: 2 to 3 cm shorter, about 156–157 cm, for spins and edge changes.
- Beginners: often 1 to 2 cm shorter, about 157–158 cm, or a softer board.
evo says the same in words: park riders toward the short end of its range, all-mountain, powder and freeride riders toward the long end, heavier riders longer. Never Summer adds a height check: the board should land between your chest and chin, never as tall as you.
Width for a one hundred seventy-pound rider: the boot-size check
Weight sets the length; boot size sets the width. Jones says a regular-width board works up to men's US 10 (women's 11.5) and gives a minimum waist width for every half size above it. Never Summer's rule reads "Men >10.5/11 = X" and "Men >12 = DF" (its extra-wide class). Burton: "Larger than men's US 12 will almost certainly need a wide snowboard for the best performance." The full table, size by size, is on the snowboard hub and in the width guide.
Either side of one hundred seventy pounds
Ten pounds lighter, a one hundred sixty-pound rider reads 145–167 cm across the charts, sharing 154–157 cm. Ten pounds heavier, a one hundred eighty-pound rider reads 150+ cm, sharing 160–161 cm.
For a one hundred seventy-pound rider these are the brands' general charts; each board model also has its own weight range, and that range wins for that board. Last checked 2026-10-20; see the methodology.
